The statehood program at swisspeace has the pleasure of inviting you to the third roundtable of the ‘working with the state’ event series. This third edition focuses on research and authoritarian states and is entitled: ‘The ethics and practicalities of field research in authoritarian settings’.

This roundtable aims at bringing together researchers to discuss questions and challenges in relation to doing field research in authoritarian contexts. It seeks to identify the peculiarities of fieldwork in these settings, and reflect on how arbitrariness, uncertainty, and fear during fieldwork raises particular ethical dilemmas for researchers and respondents. Moreover, we seek to shed light on the multiple ways in which fieldworkers have found practical ways to work around or directly confront authoritarian state authorities.

The roundtable will feature the following speakers: Claudia Baez Camargo (Head of Governance Research, Basel Institute on Governance), Ursina Bentele (Program Officer, swisspeace) and Toon Dirkx (PhD Candidate, swisspeace, University of Basel). Prof. Dr. Georg Frerks (Chair in Conflict Prevention and Conflict Management, Utrecht University) will moderate the discussions.
