This introductory course will offer you the keys to develop the essential knowledge, resources and skills to optimize the management of your research data and increase your chances of complying with funding agencies new requirement.

Aims
Knowing how to manage and organize research data is becoming one of the fundamental criteria to guarantee the quality, durability and reproducibility of your research. Moreover, many funding agencies such as the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the European Commission (for Horizon 2020 and ERC grant applications) are now requiring that a data management plan be in place in order to receive research funding. This introductory course will offer you the keys to develop the essential knowledge, resources and skills to optimize the management of your research data and increase your chances of complying with funding agencies new requirement.


Objectives
• To acquire the fundamentals regarding research data management and discover the resources at your disposal to better manage your data
• To be familiar with the best practices regarding research data management throughout its lifecycle
• To grasp the benefits of these practices and better learn how to answer the new requirements from funding agencies
• To appropriate and put into practice the tools at your disposal to optimize your research data management daily and over time
• To know the best resources to optimize the preparation of your research data management • To share your experience regarding research data management with your colleagues.


Content
1. What is Research Data Management (RDM) and why is it relevant for you? 2. What is a Data Management Plan (DMP) and why does it apply to you? 3. Concretely, how do you create and write a DMP? 4. What are the RDM best practices and how can they help you? 5. Which tools would be best to strengthen your RDM? In general and in your discipline? 6. Which resources are available to guide you?
The participants will fill out a questionnaire before the workshop with specific questions and the trainers will adjust the workshop based the respective knowledge and experience regarding research data management.

Silke Bellanger is an academic librarian and head of research support services at the University of Basel. She works in research and university libraries since 2006, focusing on open access, research data and information literacy. She is co leading the project on research data management at the University of Basel. Iris Lindenmann is an academic documentation specialist, working for the research support at the University of Basel and the National Infrastructure for Editions (NIE-INE). Her main areas of work are research data management and digital long-term archiving.
