Improving Your Scientific Writing with AI

effective methods for revising your scientific texts with AI tools (Workshop Part II)

AI tools have become ubiquitous in scientific writing, and it is difficult to keep up with the pace of change. This hands-on workshop equips you with up-to-date, effective methods for revising your scientific texts with AI tools.

The workshop will provide:
- step-by-step techniques and prompts for effectively revising scientific texts with AI
- comparisons of the strengths and weaknesses of leading AI tools for scientific writing
- troubleshooting common problems and limitations of AI tools
- guidance on ethical and legal aspects around AI in academic writing and publishing

The collaborative sessions will include time to share experiences with fellow researchers, and in the second session participants will demo different tools for the workshop and evaluate in groups how they applied the tools to revise their own
texts.

Learning Objectives
Through examples and hands-on practice, you will learn how to use AI tools to:
- restructure complex information for improved logical flow
- transform rough passages into crisp, persuasive arguments
- avoid common mistakes before submission

  • Please bring a laptop with access to an LLM chatbot (e.g., ChatGPT, Le Chat, Claude, etc.) and an AI writing assistant (LanguageTool, DeepL Write, Grammarly) of your choice
  • If possible, also select a text or a section of a text you would like to
    work on in the workshop

This workshop is led by Dr. Anthony Mahler. He is an academic copyeditor and writing consultant at the University of Basel Language Center. Based on a critical AI
approach, Anthony is collaborating on university projects that train effective and responsible methods of employing natural language generation in academic writing, such as the 2024 lecture series Academic Writing with Digital Tools and the 2025
SciLib Forum: AI Meets Scientific Writing.

This workshop has two parts:

Part I: Thursday, 16.04.2026, 14:15-19:15

Part II: Thursday, 30.04.2026, 14:15-15:45
