Women In War - Reflections from Kurdistan and Ukraine

A panel discussion

Flyer

The Gender, War, and Security Research Group at the University of Basel and swisspeace invite you to a panel discussion reflecting on women’s participation in war.

Whether as combatants, politicians, or activists, women’s roles during war and violent conflict are often dismissed, essentialized, or objectified. In direct conversation with Isabel Käser’s new book (see link below), The Kurdish Women's Freedom Movement: Gender, Body Politics and Militant Femininities (Cambridge 2021), this panel considers the intersection of gender and war in two distinct conflict landscapes — Kurdistan and Ukraine — to prompt critical reflection on gendered assumptions of equality, agency, and violent resistance and to discuss visions of an anti-militarist and anti-imperialist feminist future.

Panel Participants:

Julia Wartmann (University of Basel)
Yuliia Mieriemova (University of Basel)
Isabel Käser (University of Bern)
Chair: Elizabeth Mesok (University of Basel)
