Workshop

Affective and Material Methodologies

In this workshop, we discuss key concepts of the anthropologist Yael Navaro’s (University of Cambridge) scholarship.

By taking both her earlier work on affect and materiality as well as her ongoing work on violence and spirituality into consideration, we approach conceptual and methodological questions of the anthropology of the state. Since the critical theorizing of the state in Turkey has shaped Navaro’s entire work since the publication of her first book “Faces of the State” (PUP, 2002), we will particularly focus on different perspectives to “read the state”. Although situated in different ethnographic fields and theoretical discussions, the papers of the workshop participants take up the pressing issues of the state, violence, and/or affect.
