In a new interview for Oral Histories, Feminist Theory, Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyěwùmí reflects on how her Yoruba background shaped her critique of Western gender theory and American sociology.
She recounts her experiences as one of only a few Black graduate students at UC Berkeley, explaining how these experiences led her to interpret U.S.-based studies of race and gender through African-centered sociological perspectives. These experiences informed her broader argument that Western social science and particularly American sociology have long been inattentive to Africa and its epistemologies.
