Financing the doctorate

There are numerous options for financing the doctoral studies. In principle, financing is the responsibility of the doctoral student (the University of Basel does not guarantee financing). We differentiate between basic funding (securing your income during your doctorate) and additional financial support, which you can apply for on a case-by-case basis. In addition to basic financing, it is possible to apply for financial support from G3S, the University of Basel and other foundations for further education, travel, lecturing or similar.

Basic financing

Usually, doctorates are (base)financed according to one of the following models:

1. Financing through scholarships

The following types of scholarships are possible ways of obtaining basic financing:

  • Start-up grants: one-year G3S start-up grants at the beginning of the doctorate allow you to prepare an application for the SNSF or other positions during this time. Calls for applications are issued twice a year and are announced on the  G3S website and via the University of Basel's job portal.

  • Scholarship from the Research Fund for the Promotion of Young Scientists (final phase): The University of Basel supports the academic careers of outstanding young researchers through contributions from the Research Fund. The call for applications is aimed at young researchers at the University of Basel who are pursuing an academic career and have already distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements. Funding of up to CHF 80,000 can be applied for. The University aims to improve the proportion of women in the upper career levels. Excellent female scientists are invited to apply within the framework of the call for applications.

  • Scholarship for foreign doctoral students: The Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Researchers (EKAS) offers scholarships for foreign doctoral students.

2. Assistant positions

These positions include the following tasks:

  • Administrative support
  • Teaching
  • Supervision/counseling of students
  • Semester planning
  • Assistance with the organization of events (e.g. workshops or public lectures)
  • and other similar tasks

Assistant positions are so-called qualification positions and provide the opportunity to carry out doctoral research in addition to academic and administrative work in a subject area.

Open positions are published via the job portal of the University of Basel.

3. Research assistance

As a research assistant, you are employed as a doctoral student in a (larger) research project, which is usually funded by the SNSF or other third-party funds. Open positions at the University of Basel are published via the job portal.

4. Private financing

The dissertation is carried out alongside paid employment outside the university.

Selective financing options through the G3S

G3S members can submit ongoing financing applications for smaller contributions to G3S and have the option of taking advantage of a one-off bridging grant in emergency situations. The G3S supports doctoral students with expenses that are directly related to the doctoral project or that are incurred as part of their doctoral studies.

1. Financing of smaller project costs

Smaller project costs include, for example

  • Language courses offered by the Language Center of the University of Basel
  • Continuing education courses for employees of the University of Basel
  • Transferable skills
  • Contributions for proofreading the dissertation manuscript
  • Support for the organization of doctoral events (workshops, lecture series, etc.)
  • Travel expenses for conferences that are not covered by the travel fund
  • Co-teaching: The G3S finances one course per semester, taught by 2 members of the G3S. The criteria can be found here (in German).
  • In exceptional cases: Contributions to the preparation of data (e.g. transcription of interviews), smaller contributions to support field research (e.g. visa costs etc.)

As a general rule, applications are accepted if no other financing options are available at the University of Basel or if existing funding options have been exhausted. Applications can be submitted at any time to the G3S coordinator Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch).

Applications must include the following information

  • Date or period of the project
  • Budget
  • If applicable: details of other bodies to which the same application has been submitted

Our motto: Better to ask twice than to get it wrong once!

2. Bridging assistance in emergency situations

The following criteria apply to an application for bridging assistance in emergency situations:

  • Maximal amount that can be granted: max. CHF 2000, one person per semester
  • Reasons for granting these funds: financial hardship, should promote/enable the continuation/completion of the dissertation. It must be stated in the application that the dissertation will be completed within a few months.
  • Decisions are made after consultation with the G3S management committee
  • The application must be submitted in writing. An accompanying letter from the supervisor must be provided.
  • Per person: one-time contribution

Applications can be submitted to the G3S coordinator Julia Büchele (j.buechele@unibas.ch) at any time. They will be discussed and decided on by the executive committee as soon as possible.
