Management and coordination of the G3S

Day-to-day operations & strategic planning

The day-to-day operations of the G3S is managed by the coordinator Dr. Julia Büchele in close coordination with the Chairman of the G3S, Prof. Dr. George-Paul Meiu. The strategic and content planning of the G3S is the responsibility of the executive committee. It is responsible for the allocation of teaching assignments, funding for events, research support and the nomination of candidates for starting scholarships. All decisions with major financial consequences (over CHF 1000) must be put on the agenda of a meeting of the executive committee. During the semester, this committee meets regularly (usually on the respective dates of the departmental meeting). The executive committee strives for the greatest possible participation of all subjects in the department and reports regularly to the departmental assembly on the development of the G3S. The sub-programs of our department are an integral part of the G3S. They are responsible for specific disciplinary training and are part of inter-university and international networks.


The formal composition of the executive committee

The steering committee includes all G3S stakeholders in a balanced representation. It consists of at least six members as well as the management of the department in an advisory capacity. The members of the executive committee are

  • the Head of the Department of Social Sciences
  • two further professorial members
  • one member of the academic staff with a doctorate
  • the coordinator of the G3S
  • two representatives of the doctoral students
  • Doctoral students who sit on the committee as guests

The members of the executive committee to be elected are elected by the departmental assembly for a period of 2 years. The doctoral student representatives are elected by secret ballot by the G3S doctoral students for a period of one year. Guests are admitted to the executive committee for a period of at least one semester. They have a say, but no formal voting rights. The departmental assembly appoints the chairperson of the G3S from among the professorial members of the executive committee. The executive committee selects the permanent coordinator. Guests are elected for a minimum term of one semester by the plenary assembly of doctoral students.
