Teaching and learning opportunities for doctoral students

G3S offers low-threshold programs to supplement the existing doctoral programs offered by the departments and the university GRACE. The offers organized by G3S aim to provide interdisciplinary support for doctoral students and to promote exchange between the departments. In addition, G3S provides selective financial and administrative support to the subjects of the Department of Social Sciences in the organization of doctoral events.

We welcome suggestions for courses, lecture series, exchange groups, etc. in order to tailor the program as closely as possible to the needs of doctoral students. Specific requests can be submitted to the G3S Coordination Office. After a needs assessment and cost approval, the G3S Coordination takes over the organization completely or supports doctoral students (financially and administratively) in the independent planning and implementation.

G3S courses

G3S offers courses in the following areas:

  • Disciplinary courses (usually offered by the subjects and supported by the G3S)
  • Writing Processes (Writing 9 to 5/ Annual Writing Retreat/ Writing Lab/ Get it done)
  • Methods (Applied Data Analysis/ MAXQDA/ Data Management/ Questionnaire and Survey Design)
  • Teaching experience/ collective certificate in university didactics (Co-teaching/ Doing Diversity)
  • Networking within the department (Noon-Talks/ Co-teaching)
  • Coaching (including communication/dealing with discriminatory experiences)

Documentation of credits earned

There are two options:

  • Credit points for courses and classes taken via the University of Basel system are automatically visible on the personal profile of the MoNA online service. The current overview of credits can be viewed there at any time.
  • Credit points for courses that cannot be booked via the University of Basel's online system or that take place at other universities (conferences, workshops, summer schools, etc.) must be entered via a learning contract. You must conclude the learning contract with your supervisor in advance of the event. You can find the relevant information sheet here.

Both forms of transcript of records are forwarded to the G3S Coordination Office at the end. These serve as the basis for a confirmation of completed coursework for the doctorate. Within the framework of the G3S, this is a total of at least 18 credit points.

All courses for doctoral students in the various subjects are listed separately in the course directory. Registration for the courses takes place via the official registration system.

The G3S independently organizes events that are not listed in the course directory. We draw attention to these and other events that could be relevant for doctoral students in the regularly updated calendar of events.

G3S supports its members in gaining teaching experience during their doctorate. To this end, we finance one shared teaching assignment per semester. Anyone who would like to teach must submit an application. These can be submitted by two members of G3S who are doing their doctorate in two different subject areas of the Department of Social Sciences. The executive committee decides on the allocation.
