Doctoral training curriculum

As a doctoral student in the social sciences, you are obliged to attend courses or other events for academic exchange in addition to your research work and thus earn credit points. It is possible to do a doctorate in the social sciences with or without a connection to the G3S. With an affiliation to the G3S, the curriculum is extended by several credit points and the certificate of your doctoral degree will list the membership. Without affiliation to the G3S, you are automatically part of the faculty's Graduate School of Social Sciences and Humanities, the umbrella structure for all doctoral students at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Curriculum as a member of the G3S

Members of the doctoral program commit to attending courses worth at least 18 credit points throughout the entire project phase, with at least

  • 6 credit points in the area of "Methods and Theories of the Social Sciences"
  • 3 credit points in the "Interdisciplinary area" and
  • 3 credit points from the subject-specific range of the participating disciplines.

The remaining 6 credit points can be taken flexibly. As a rule, G3S members acquire significantly more credit points. This is partly due to the fact that credit points can also be earned by presenting research results at scientific conferences, participating in courses offered by other universities and through teaching. The management committee decides on the allocation of courses and equivalent achievements to the three areas.

The G3S confirms the acquisition of the 18 credit points in the above-mentioned areas in writing. The confirmation is then submitted together with the dissertation manuscript. Further information on the procedure for formally completing the dissertation at the Faculty of Philology and History can be found here.

Curriculum as a non-member

The curriculum of the doctorate without membership in the G3S follows the general doctoral regulations of the Faculty of Humanities.

Courses of the G3S

The services offered by G3S are based on the needs of the departments and the wishes of the doctoral students. In principle, G3S supports the departments organizationally and financially in the implementation of doctoral programmes. The offers organized by G3S aim to provide interdisciplinary support for doctoral students and to promote exchange between the departments.

We expressly encourage PhD students to help shape the programme. Specific requests can be submitted to the G3S coordination team. If there is sufficient interest, we will implement the suggestions. The G3S also supports doctoral students (financially and administratively) in the independent organization of events such as workshops, lectures, etc.

The G3S offers courses and events in the following areas:

  • Disciplinary courses are usually offered by the subjects (and supported by the G3S)
  • Writing processes (Writing 9 to 5/ Annual Writing Retreat/ Writing Lab/ Get it done)
  • Methods (Applied Data Analysis/ MAXQDA/ Data Management/ Questionnaire and Survey Design)
  • Teaching experience/ collective certificate in university didactics (Co-teaching/ Doing Diversity)
  • Networking within the Department (Noon-Talks/ Co-teaching)
  • Coaching (Coaching for SNF applications)
